A Healing Meditation You Can Do Yourself
You may make a voice recording for yourself of this meditation, or have a friend read it to you as you relax. To share this meditation with others, please direct them to this website. Many thanks!
1. Connect with Spirit: Get relaxed, sitting or lying down. Breathe gently, but deeply. Notice - feel it if you can - your connection with Spirit. (If “Spirit” is not part of your vocabulary, use another word to depict the life-giving energy present in the world: God, Source, the Universe, the Light, the Living Presence, etc. Use the language that speaks to your soul.) See Light emanating and reaching everywhere. Feel this energy all around you, in everything. Spend a couple of minutes with this.
2. Connect with Earth: Feel your connection with the Earth, her solidity underneath you. Feel how well she has held you up over your entire life, how she gives you everything your body needs: food, water, materials for your clothing, your shelter, for travel, for communication; human and/or animal companions with whom you can share the journey of life. Spend a couple of minutes with this. 3. Notice Body: Now notice your body deeply. Take time to feel the Light pour down through the top of your head to fill your body completely, until you can see yourself shining. See the Light sparkling in every cell of your body. 4. Grounding: Imagine that you have a strong root which tethers you to Mother Earth. It is a taproot of Light that anchors in your abdomen, and stretches down through your body and legs and out through the soles of your feet to the center of the Earth. As the Light pours in through the top of your head, watch the river of Light flow, gently carrying anything that is not of the Light along its current and down through the root into the Earth. It is as if there is a river |
flowing from God through the top of your head and down through your body to your legs, and then out through the soles of your feet to the center of the Earth. Stay with this for as long as it feels comfortable. (It gets easier with practice.)
5. Appreciate Body: Now relax your attention. Simply notice how your body is working every day, beautifully harmonized. Heart beating, blood flowing, stomach digesting, soft tissue - muscle, ligaments, tendons, fascia - expanding and contracting, lungs breathing. All without your active control. Notice how your body has mechanisms to heal itself: that a cut stops bleeding and the skin grows back together; that a cold or flu eventually go away just with water and rest; that after surgery, the body knits back together any tissue that has been wounded or cut. Notice that there are always unexplained recoveries; that no illness or injury is disabling or fatal for 100% of the people it affects; that there are always people who don't fit the statistical mean. Again, see the Light flowing through your body, from crown to root.
6. Love and Gratitude: Pay special attention to the body part or body system for which you desire healing. Send it love, as if you were holding it in your arms, your sweet young one. Thank it for doing its job so well and so faithfully for your whole life. If you see, hear, experience, feel, understand anything, just notice what that is. Stay with the gratitude.
7. Envisioning the healing: Now see yourself in your mind's eye, or feel yourself in your body, doing those things you love to do that require a properly functioning (body part or body system), perhaps things you are not able to do right now, or can do only with difficulty. For example, biking, hiking, traveling, eating with friends and family, walking the dog, camping, playing with the children, climbing, having sex with your beloved, etc. Identify those things that give you joy and fill your heart. See yourself engaged in them.
8. More Gratitude: Feel gratitude again - for your life, the opportunities for physicality you have had and will have, your well-functioning body. Say a prayer of gratitude for the healing that is already taking place.
9. Throughout the day: Whenever you think of it, or at times you arrange ahead of time, send love and gratitude to your (body part or body system). Love is energy, just like medicine is energy. Love is a very powerful medicine.
